Special Services during the School Closure
Dear parents and families of students with disabilities,
I hope this email finds you and your family safe and healthy. As you already know, we are in unprecedented times in our community, state, country and world. Grants Pass School District leaders are working tirelessly to create plans and take actions that will allow us to help students continue learning during the school closure period, which is expected to last through the month of April and possibly longer.
Information from the Governor and Oregon Department of Education is shared daily, so our district leadership team is responding to their directives and guidance. Some of the information changes from day to day, which creates a true challenge. Additionally, the health and safety of our students as well as the health and safety of the educators providing supplemental learning remains our highest priority. Because of all of these factors, we ask for your patience and teamwork as we work together in new ways during the next several weeks.
Grants Pass School District Staff will resume work the week of March 30 for planning and preparing for this new type of model. Our teachers are already going above and beyond to provide meaningful work for your students!, Here is what you can expect regarding the delivery of Special Education Services during the closure period:
-Supplemental Learning materials will be provided to your child from the general education staff, the special education teacher(s), or both. These may be online resources, printed materials, google sites, or a combination of all of these. For any student who needs a chromebook, schools will be prepared to check out chromebooks for use during the closure. Chromebooks and any printed materials will be available to pick up at schools or available for delivery if your family needs that.
-The parts of the IEP which are possible to implement during the closure period will be implemented. For example, we will still provide speech services via teletherapy or by sending home speech work, but we will not be able to provide services that require in-person contact.
-Your child’s case manager will contact you to discuss the services and learning supports that are possible during the closure as well as the status of any upcoming meetings, if there are any, regarding your child’s IEP.
- Although it is not required that we continue scheduling and holding IEP meetings, we know it is best to do so when possible. If IEP meetings are held, they will take place with participants appearing via phone. Your child’s case manager will discuss this with you to ensure that you are able to meaningfully participate.
Our office will post regular updates as well as ideas and resources on the Student Services Department site on the Grants Pass School District Website.
During the closure period, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s IEP case manager or our office if you have any questions. Email is the best way to reach us at this time. Thank you, in advance, for your patience during this challenging time. Please take care and stay safe!
