• Introduction: The first paragraph should be 3-5 sentences setting the stage for your essay. 

    There are 3 parts:

    1.  Begin with a GENERAL statement about the book, or a main theme in the story or essay..

    Examples:  

    The most difficult things in life sometimes bring the most growth to those who are willing to change.

                                        OR

    The Tiger Rising is a book written by Kate DiCamillo. 

                                         OR

    With friends and family, any challenge can be overcome.  

    2.  Next, write a CONNECTING STATEMENT : introduce the text (story), or key concept of your essay  

    Examples:

    The Tiger Rising is a story about a boy named Rob who is struggling to deal with the death of his mother.
                                              OR

    The main characters Rob and Sistine are both struggling with how to deal with difficult situations and their emotions.                                 
                                                OR

    Rob and Sistine are two lonely kids who come together to save a tiger.   

     

    3.  Finish with your Thesis Statement  (One sentence that states your MAIN CHARACTER and how he or she changed in the story.  

    Examples:

    As he becomes friends with Sistine, Rob learns to share his feelings.  
                                   OR 

    Becoming friends with Rob teaches Sistine to be more accepting.   

                                  OR

    Before meeting Sistine, Rob is depressed but by the end of the book he becomes hopeful about life.
