AVID is a college-readiness system for South Middle School that supports the AVID Elective class. AVID is designed to help students develop the skills they need to be successful in college. It places a special emphasis on growing writing, critical thinking, teamwork, organization, and reading skills. In the AVID Elective, lessons are also designed around learning about tenacity, grit, perseverance, and persistence.At South, we also focus on AVID Schoolwide, where our teachers - in every class - use instructional strategies to prepare students for college and career readiness, aware, and exploration while building on the aspirations of students.For parents considering the class for their student, there are three things to keep in mind about the AVID Elective class:
- How to determine if AVID is a good fit;
- What AVID students learn;
- How AVID students perform after high school.
1. How to Determine is AVID is a Good Fit:
The best students for the AVID Elective class are usually B or C students who have shown potential and have a desire to attend a four-year college after graduation. All students are eligible to enroll in the AVID Elective. However, after over 40 years of research, the students who benefit the most are in the academic middle.
AVID students are often those who are underrepresented on college campuses. All students who apply for the AVID Elective class go through an application and interview process.
2. What AVID Students Learn:The curriculum focuses on building skills and behaviors that lead to success. Basically, AVID teaches kids how to do school. Students learn skills like note-taking, reading and writing strategies, and how to interact with peers and work in groups - all skills that students will need to succeed in high school, college, and a future career.Students in the AVID Elective class are also challenged to take more challenging courses, such as honors and AP courses in high school. AVID focuses on college-readiness, giving students the critical thinking skills, goal-setting, time-management, and note-taking. Students also learn information and awareness around what the process is for applying to college, to receive financial aid, and how to look for and apply for scholarships.
3. How AVID Students Perform After High School:
According to a 2017 study out of Washington, 98% of seniors in AVID schools graduated on time, 94% had plans to attend a post-secondary institute, and 93% had completed entrance requirements for a four-year college.
First generation, low-income students who go through the AVID Elective class through high school are much more likely to earn a bachelor's degree within six years than their peers nationwide without an AVID experience, at a rate of 42% to 11%. Every student, no matter how successful or how challenged she or he might be, can gain significantly from an AVID experience.
