Dear North Families,
We are busy preparing for a new year and we are excited to see our returning students and look forward to establishing connections with our new students. I hope the summer has been kind to your family. The summer is an important time for students to spend quality time with family and friends and to rest and rejuvenate. As September approaches, it is important to start thinking about the beginning of the year and all that it brings.
This is the second year that we are asking families to register online. All parents, new and returning, can access the registration page from the District homepage, and then select “parents” and “registration.” All returning District 7 students will register as “returning student.” Only students new to our district should be registering as a “new student.” Please make sure to register your student as soon as possible so we can ensure a smooth start to the school year. If you have any questions, please call the front office (541-474-5740). We also have a computer set up in our library for registration purposes.
All new students and parents are invited to our New Student Barbecue on Wednesday, August 29th, from 6:00-7:30 PM. This is an opportunity for our incoming 6th grade students and new 7th and 8th graders to see their schedule, find classrooms, and practice their locker combination. This is an informal gathering and families may come at any time between 6:00-7:30 PM.
Tuesday, September 4th, is the first day of school for 6th grade students only. 6th graders will have received a copy of their schedule at the New Student Barbecue on August 29th, but will pick up another schedule on that first morning. The first day is for our 6th grade students to get acquainted with their teachers and their new school surroundings, to learn drop-off/pick-up and lunch routines, and to continue practicing their locker combination. 7th and 8th grade students will be able to pick up their schedules in the gym on their first day of school Wednesday, September 5th.
Our school day begins at 8:30 AM and concludes at 3:09 PM. Wednesday’s are designed for staff development and the school day will start one hour later at 9:30 AM. However, there is no late start on Wednesday, September 5th and school begins at 8:30 for all students. The first late start Wednesday will occur on September 12th.
This year, North welcomes three new teachers to our campus: Janeen Andrew in Health, Scott Burns in Math and Tim Bartelt in ELL. Selena Alderson will also be joining our counseling center team. We are excited about all four new members and what they bring to North Middle School.
Relationships will be a point of emphasis this year at North. If you think back at some point in your education, you probably remember the bean experiment. You put soil in a bag or a small cup and then placed the bean seed below the surface and then provided it with water and put it in a place that received sunlight. The seed had a relationship with the soil, the water, and the sun and it needed all of them in order to grow and be successful. Whether at home or at school, it is important that a child has positive relationships and feels loved and cared about. We are beings that feel first and then think and learn. The way to a student’s mind is through the heart. The way to their heart is through strong relationships. We want all of our students to feel safe and comfortable at school. We want our school to be a place students want to be. We want students to thrive and we start with relationships.
We are happy to have you with us this year, and we look forward to working with all of our students and families. Enjoy the rest of the summer and we will see you soon!
