Hi there and welcome to Mr. Frye's classes. I teach History and Government at GPHS. I enjoy music, reading, coffee, dry British wit, and soccer, not neccesarily in that order. I am married and have two (mostly grown) kids (see the picture at Buckingham Palace). I have a BA in History from San Diego State and and M.A. in Liberal Studies (Philosophy & History) from Excelsior College. I have been teaching since 1990 and been at GPHS since 1994.
"There is no such thing as an uninteresting subject; the only thing that can exist is an uninterested person" (G.K. Chesterton)
History is the stage upon which ideas are acted out. It is the laboratory of human nature. So my approach to history is not so much to memorize what happened (although it is true you need to know the story) but to look at facts and events and ask "why?" and "so what?" I like all sorts of history and there is always something new to learn. History is also a cautionary tale and warning agianst hubris, as Chesterton reminds us...
"Many clever men like you have trusted to civilization. Many clever Babylonians, many clever Egyptians, many clever men at the end of Rome. Can you tell me, in a world that is flagrant with the failures of civilisation, what there is particularly immortal about yours?"
