"Emanicipate yourselves from mental slavery,
None but ourselves can free our minds."
Welcome to your English class webpage! This year I am teaching The Poetry of Rock and Advanced American Literature. Email is the best way to reach me - to do so just click on my name to the left.
Please bring the following to class everyday:
- An open mind
- Spiral notebook/journal
- Three ring binder for handouts, etc.
- Writing utensil
- Textbook and/or current book
The instructor assumes the students are intelligent people worthy of respect, and will treat them so, and he expects to be treated so in kind. Compassion, kindness, respect, intellectual freedom and maintaining an open mind are top priorities in the classroom - there will be no tolerance whatsoever of degrading comments of any kind.
It is expected that the students will take that role seriously, that they be students, and that they follow the proven methods of successful study. Being prepared, being on time for class and ready to go when the bell rings, completing the reading and homework on time, engaging in class discussions and abiding by all school rules and policies is essential. Please, no food or drink in the classroom, and be sure to turn off and put away cell phones.
Grades are important, and the better yours are, the more opportunities will be open to you. What is more important, though, is genuine understanding. Work hard, do the reading, be prepared for and engaged in class, seek understanding, take risks, and the grade will take care of itself. For a more in-depth explanation of the grading policy, please see the syllabus.
