State Guidance on Graduation Released

Dear GPHS Senior Students and Parents:

We hope this letter finds you well.  By now, you have received the news that there will be no in-scool attendance for the remainder of the year. In addition, we have received final guidance from the Oregon Department of Education on how our seniors across the state will be affected with graduation and the status in their classes for the remainder of the year.

Please read below for details.

For seniors, for the current semester –

·        Grades from January 27 through March 13 will be “finalized” by April 9th

·        Any grade that is an A, B, or C or 70% or greater will be converted to a pass/no pass

·        Teachers may, on a case by case basis, determine that a score lower than 70% might be converted to “pass”.

·        Students will earn a .5 credit for 2nd semester courses

·        Students who are not passing classes by April 9th will be allowed to continue working on the course until a passing grade is received.  It is highly encouraged that seniors work hard to get the work done by May 29th to be considered for participation in any graduation activities we are able to conduct.  Any remaining seniors who have not met graduation requirements by May 29thwill have until August 31st to be considered as part of the Class of 2020.  If not completed, students will be invited back to attend a program allowing them to finish in the 20/21 school year.

For students enrolled in credit-retrieval- they must complete this work.

Students do not need to meet Essential Skills requirements.  Students do not need to meet Personalized Learning requirements.

Staff members will be reaching out to students to inform and confirm with them what their status for graduation is.  If they have not fulfilled the requirements for graduation, they will be informed exactly what is needed.  We will do everything possible to provide them the opportunity to graduate.

For all students who have completed their graduation requirements, counselors and career center staff are ready to work with individual students on helping them with their post high school planning for the remainder of the year.

Our next step, is to work towards a proper celebration of the class of 2020 and developing some safe/online activities that give students the honor and recognition they have worked so hard for- and they deserve!  I will be in touch with students and parents on steps regarding these celebrations.  We are beginning to make preparations for this case, and want to do everything possible to celebrate our students.  As stated, I will be in touch with students and parents.  Thank you for all of your patience and understanding in these trying time.  We are GP!  We are GP 2020!
